President Trump's top pick to replace outgoing White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was Nick Ayers, chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence. However, Ayers announced Sunday that he's leaving the White House. Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) on Monday made it clear that he would like to be chosen as Kelly's successor. "Serving as chief of staff would be an incredible honor," Meadows said in a statement. "The president has a long list of qualified candidates and I know he'll make the best selection for his administration and for the country." White House sources say Meadows is on Trump's list of contenders, along with White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney, Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, and Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.
