Each week, we spotlight a cool innovation recommended by some of the industry's top tech writers. This week's pick is a pair of sunglasses that block out LED and LCD lights.
If too much of your life is spent staring at screens, said Arielle Pardes at Wired, a new pair of shades could soon help you escape the glare. IRL Glasses — the acronym stands for "In Real Life" — have polarized lenses that block light emitted by LED and LCD displays. "Put them on and the TV in the sports bar seems to switch off; billboards blinking ahead seem to go blank."
The shades launched on Kickstarter earlier this month and raised nearly $90,000 more than the $25,000 needed to begin production; a pair costs $49 to $79. If you hope the glasses will make you put down your phone, be warned that they can't block OLED screens, such as those on recent Apple and Samsung phones.
