What the critics say
The 2019 Genesis G70
Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz usually just ignore wannabe challengers—“but they’ll notice the Genesis G70.” The first pure-bred Genesis built since Hyundai moved its luxury models into an independent division, the brand’s new compact sport sedan combines the opulence of a Mercedes C-class with truly enviable road dynamics. “From the driver’s seat, its balance, poise, and assurance do what a BMW 3-series does, only sometimes better and more cheerfully.”
Road & Track
South Korea’s car of the year will be priced lower than its German rivals, but apart from prestige, “it’s hard to see why.” The body styling is “probably Hyundai’s best work to date,” while the cabin, which is “quieter inside than a small cathedral,” features a panoramic power roof, quilted leather, and loads of aluminum accents. Available for preorder with a choice of engines that include a turbocharged 365-hp V-6, the G70 “leaves little to be desired as a road car.”
Though it isn’t quite as plush as a $40,000 Mercedes—nor as eye-catching as Alfa Romeo’s Giulia—“where the G70 shines is in its balance.” Its comfortable ride, “super playful” chassis, and posh, user-friendly cockpit all contribute to an ideal blend of luxury, comfort, and sportiness. Though it needs time to prove itself, it “just might” merit a spot near the very top of its class.
