Charity of the week
Some 1.1 billion people across the world, from school-age children to the elderly, have a clinical need for glasses but either cannot afford a pair or are unable to travel to an eye clinic. Vision loss puts these people at a profound disadvantage in learning, the job market, and being able to help their community. OneSight (onesight.org) aims to create a world where lack of access to vision care is no longer a barrier to achievement. Its mobile eye clinics visit high-need communities in countries from Brazil to the U.S. to Thailand to give free eye exams and hand out glasses. Over the past 28 years, OneSight has also set up 56 permanent health centers, providing access to quality eye care for nearly 11 million people worldwide.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
