It wasn’t all bad
When it comes to helping others, there’s virtually nothing that Jon Porter won’t say yes to. The Pittsburgh native’s do-gooder journey started four years ago, when Porter vowed to help others after being smitten by regret for turning down a homeless woman who asked for a ride. Since then, the 29-year-old has done more than 1,000 favors for people who post their needs on Reddit: Giving rides in the middle of the night, buying groceries, fixing an antenna. Last week, Porter outdid himself by donating a kidney to stranger.
At 70, Bob Long has just won the just world’s longest horse race—outpacing 43 younger competitors to become the oldest person to finish the Mongol Derby. Long navigated across Mongolia’s mountains, rivers, and unfamiliar terrain in a punishing 621-mile race on semi-wild horses. While others sustained injuries or struggled to finish, Long pressed through, completing it in seven days, riding 28 different horses. After watching a documentary about the Mongol Derby and becoming inspired to compete, the retired chief technology officer began training with previous winners of the race, riding four or five horses a day. “Preparation,” said Long, “trumps youth.”
